about

/// THE ARTIST ON EP04 ///

For the tracks of EP04 I started to use field recordings and synthesizers in combination with the guitar and effect pedals. I love field recordings for their ability to transport the listener to a specific place and how they interact with other sounds that are brought to the composition.

UFER
Slow waves of sound move across the stereo horizon accompanied by hissing noise. The movements intensify for a moment and come back to a calm state. In the end shimmering high frequencies are left like barely visible lights in the distance. This piece is the result of a patch on the DSI evolver with a bit of reverb and tremolo.

GROSSER BUNKERBERG
The field recording of this track was recorded in a park nearby my home during a warm summer night. A pointilistic bass adds some color in the lows while the main melodic element emerges to the front and moves back into the night. When listening closely, random noises like a car rapidly accelerating and singing birds are audible.

FONTÄNE
The opening noise of this track is actually a field recording of a fountain from the same park as in GROSSER BUNKERBERG. The elements of this track slowly shift back and forth while occasionally being overpowered by a heavily compressed and distorted bass. The stereo field is constantly being measured out by a fluttering sound almost like a helicopter searching for something.

FRIEDENSTRASSE
A melodic line with a sense of calmness starts the track and after a short while a field recording of rain draws our attention. Raindrops hitting a metallic surface, although random, create a somewhat percussive layer. A synth sound that is slowly creeping in changes the mood to a more alert state.

HOMMAGE AN YH
This track was an experiment with an unclear outcome. I recorded four melodic fragments separately on individual channels of the four track tape recorder without hearing the playback of the other channels. The instrument used for the recording is a Hohner Pianet. To showcase the beautiful sound of the Pianet I didn’t add any other instruments. In a separate step I added and tweaked the reverb and delay while recording the four channels to the computer. Although the melodic fragment remain almost unchanged throughout the piece, the combination of the lines and effects create an ever changing soundscape.
