about

A staple element of the Noorden constellation, Orion Moustache returns to the fold with his new four-track audio journey, »The same but not the same«. Scanning out the fringes between fluffed-out, FX-strewn electronics and ambient oddities, the Berlin-based producer has been carving out a body of work both riveting and profound, honing his entrancingly meditative vision through a string of releases that defy listening norms and habits. Sleek sinescapes and gritty analogue chatter rolled into an oddly cinematic object of sorts, Orion Moustache’s newest quartet of corrugated pieces organically combines to tell a contrasting tale of convergence and dissonance, ghostly presence and magnetic imprint, static-filled abstraction and plain sight figurativeness. In one word, a sonic riddle wrapped in an enigma.

Breaking the EP in, »Path« unreels a vivid cascade of cheeky hardware divagations laced with raucous bursts and warped keyboard loops spinning in a zero G state of equilibrium, billowing out into aether before dissolving into a thick puddle of filters and distortions. Taking Italo for a ride down post-industrial Giallo atmospherics, »Ostinato« treats us to a maelstrom of noise-adjacent, cavernous churn and heavily dubbed-out synthlines, ebbing and flowing between darkness and radiance thru and thru. Flip it over and there’s »Ritual« elevating this fine mix of organic dub envelopes, Eduard Artemyev-ian poetics and kosmische-indebted circuit talk to further soul-fulfilling heights. Topping off Orion Moustache’s evolutive journey into the pulsating heart of electronics, »Bloom« delivers a weightless finale of porcelain-like brittleness and haunting harmony as we move across its alleys and recesses from micro to macro. Quietly tobogganing from ektachromatic nostalgia down the eruptive pit of white noise that swallows everything in its deadly, all-devouring wake.
